A Brazeau County resident is facing several charges following an inspection of a property in mid-November.
Drayton Valley RCMP say they were conducting a property inspection on Nov. 15, to ensure the landowner was following conditions of a court-issued probation order. However, Mounties say the suspect obstructed the investigation and assaulted an officer, resulting in his arrest.
During the inspection of the property, police say they were able to determine the suspect was in possession of more livestock than the probation order allowed and located a dog with injuries to its legs.
64-year-old Brazeau County resident James Allen Kurz is now facing several charges, including:
- Assault on a Peace officer;
- Obstruction/Resist arrest (x2);
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
- Cruelty to animals;
- Disobeying a court order.
Kurz was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody, but has since been released with his next court date set for Jan. 7, 2025, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Drayton Valley.
Officials say Kurz voluntarily worked with the Alberta SPCA and surrendered 72 dogs that were on or around the property.
Alberta RCMP Corporal Troy Savinkoff, says he is thankful the SPCA was able to assist with this case.
“We welcome the opportunity to support the Alberta SPCA with their difficult job in protecting animal welfare in this province,“ says Cpl. Savinkoff, “We are thankful that ultimately the property owner did the right thing in working with the Alberta SPCA in supporting these animals.”
