Drayton Valley town council has given first reading to a bylaw that would require anyone who wants to run in next year’s General Municipal Election to undergo a criminal records check as a part of the application process.
Council gave first reading to Bylaw 2024-01-A: Election Candidate Criminal Record Check at the regular meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
Bylaw 2024-01-A was introduced following the provincial government’s recent proclamation of Bill 20, which provides changes to the Local Authorities Elections Act. Officials say these changes were made in an effort to improve transparency and increase trust in local elections.
The Bylaw is scheduled to receive second and third readings at the Nov. 27 council meeting.
Officials also note, the information gathered during these checks will NOT be posted to the town’s website or social media pages, but will be available to view in person, upon request, at the Civic Centre.
Bylaw 2024-01-A can be viewed here.
Residents with questions or concerns are being asked to contact the town office by calling 780-514-2200.
