Residents across the province took part in the Alberta Day of Caring for Jasper on Wednesday, July 31, by bringing their empty cans and bottles down to their local bottle depots and donating them, with all proceeds going towards relief efforts for evacuees of the Jasper Complex Wildfire.
Albertans donated over $500,000 to the Red Cross through the Alberta Day of Caring website, and with matching contributions from the provincial and federal governments, the current total for money raised is $1,555,446. Officials say bottle depots are still working on processing donations received on the 31st, and will continue to accept donations through to Monday.
Bottle Depot staff say they will work to process the donations as quickly as possible and hope to have a total for funds raised through bottle donations as early as Tuesday, Aug. 3.
