The path is getting cleared for a new scrap metal recycling facility to come to Drayton Valley.
At Drayton Valley town council’s April 13 meeting, council approved the rezoning of 5302 – 34 Avenue. The site was recently acquired by Metalnecks Salvage LTD, who hope to open up a scrap metal recycling facility on the site.
The land is currently zoned as light industrial. For the purposes of scrap metal recycling, it needs to be zoned as heavy industrial.
Earlier in the council meeting was the public hearing on the rezoning, in which there was no opposition to the plan.
Town Councillor Rick Evans raised the question of the environment. The previous owner of the lot left behind some water retention ponds, and Evans was concerned if the new owners have a plan to deal with what may be in those ponds.
Administration replied, that when Metalnecks applies for their development permit, Metalnecks will be required to do an environmental impact assessment. The issue of the ponds will be dealt with then.
The previous owner of the lot was Valley Power. Valley Power ran a power plant which generated power from the waste from the nearby Weyerhauser saw mill.
Council approved the rezoning.
