Evansburg RCMP have arrested an individual following the execution of a search warrant on a rural property in Parkland County.
Mounties say they executed the search warrant on April 14, with the assistance of the Alberta SPCA and Parkland County Enforcement Services. As a result of the search, police say they were able to locate stolen property and identified several horses that were deemed to be in distress. Members of the Alberta SPCA say they seized the horses and have transferred them to a caretaking facility for further examination and treatment.
Police say 54-year-old Patricia Moore, a resident of Parkland County, is now facing several charges, including:
- Breaching a court order;
- Possession of stolen property under $5000;
- Breaching a prohibition order;
- And two counts of causing unnecessary pain and suffering or injury to an animal.
Moore is already under a court-ordered lifetime ban on owning, caring for or being in possession of any equine animal.
Detachment Commander of the Evansburg RCMP, Sergeant Jeff Sutherland, is thanking the public for their assistance in this case.
“I would like to thank those who are willing to come forward and provide information that helps protect vulnerable animals,” says Sgt. Sutherland. “It is thanks to the public that we were able to work with the Alberta SPCA and Parkland County Enforcement Services to seize these animals and protect them from further harm.”
Alberta SPCA Executive Director, Leanne Niblock, says working with the RCMP is part of the SPCA’s commitment to protecting animals.
“Prohibition orders against owning or caring for animals can be an effective tool in preventing animal distress,” added Niblock. “We want to thank the RCMP for their diligent work to enforce this order and ultimately help protect animals and will continue to work to make protections for all animals even stronger.”
Officials say Moore was taken before a Justice of the Peace and released on conditions that include making alternate housing arrangements for any remaining horses on the property.
Moore’s next court date has been scheduled for April 28, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Evansburg.
