Officials with the Grande Yellowhead School Division (GYPSD) have released their Three-Year Capital Plan and Ten-Year Facility Plan.
The Three-Year Plan includes more than $74.8 million to fund significant upgrades for four schools in the division.
Note: All prices shown below are estimated at 2024 pricing.
According to the plan, Niton Central School will receive $20,640,885.00 for a full modernization.
These plans include replacing and upgrading the current heating system, ventilation and vapour barriers, which should ensure the school operates efficiently and sustainably. Officials say these modernization efforts should significantly reduce the annual operational and maintenance costs.
Niton Central School was originally constructed in 1952 and has had several additions over the years, including a community-based library and an outdoor community pool, which have become integral parts of the community. Officials say this modernization should allow these resources to remain accessible for years to come.
The Three-Year Plan also includes $12,564,684.00 for a new ventilation/boiler system and interior modernization for Sheldon Coates Elementary School.
The current outdated heating and ventilation system will be completely replaced, which should create a comfortable and healthy environment for students. Officials say these renovations should bring more natural light into the building and create adequate classroom space, leading to the removal of temporary portable classrooms.
Sheldon Coates Elementary School was originally constructed in 1976, with portable classrooms added in 2007 and 2008. Officials say this modernization should bring the learning and teaching environment up to modern standards.
The plan also includes $17,456,124.00 for a full modernization of École Jasper Elementary School.
This modernization will focus on upgrading the outdated heating and ventilation systems and replacing windows and vapour barriers that have reached the end of their lifespan. Officials note, these upgrades need to be done immediately to ensure a safe and effective learning environment.
École Jasper Elementary School was originally built in 1964 and was previously modernized in 1998.
Finally, the Three-Year Plan includes $24,150,135.00 for a full modernization of Summitview School.
Officials say most of this funding will be used to upgrade the aging structure as an investment in the long-term benefits of the school community. Updates are also planned for most areas of the school, which officials say should bring more natural light into the building, creating a modern and efficient learning environment for staff and students.
Summitview School was originally built in 1970 with an addition in 1981.

The Ten-Year Facility includes plans for 11 projects throughout the district, including three projects in Edson and one major project in Lobstick.
Note: All prices shown below are estimated at 2024 pricing.
According to the plan for Edson, École Pine Grove School will receive $1,892,000.00 for a gym replacement and addition.
Officials say this funding will be used to demolish and reconstruct the gymnasium to align with the facility area guidelines for gymnasiums as per Alberta Education.
École Westhaven School is set to receive $400,000.00 to replace modular classrooms.
Originally built in 1982, École Westhaven School had five used modular classrooms added in 2003, which have since reached the end of their lifespan.
Finally, the plan outlines a $200,000.00 investment in Parkland Composite High School to replace exterior windows and the office brick exterior finish.
Parkland Composite was originally constructed in 1968, underwent previous modernization efforts in 2004 and 2005 and had four modular classrooms added in 2008. Officials say these upgrades should make the building more energy efficient.
For Lobstick, the Ten-Year Plan includes the modernization of Grande Trunk High School and the demolition of Evansview School and Wildwood School.
Grande Trunk High School was originally built in 1972 and in March of 2021, the GYPSD announced they would be consolidating Grand Trunk High School, Evansview School and Wildwood School into one K-12 school with a 500-student capacity at the current Grande Trunk School Site in Evansburg.
The board also approved $1.5 million in funding in 2021 to construct a second gym at Grand Trunk.
Renovations started in 2023 and are expected to be completed before the start of the 2026/27 school year.
