The Drayton Valley Thunder were back in action with a pair of home games on Friday, Jan. 17 and Saturday, Jan. 18.
On Friday, the Thunder played host to the Calgary Canucks, losing 4-3 in overtime but on Saturday, the Thunder doubled the Olds Grizzlys 6-3.

On Friday, Cooper Brown opened the scoring for the Thunder, just 4:50 into the first period. Brown’s 14th goal of the season was scored unassisted.
At the end of the first period, the Drayton Valley Thunder had outshot the Calgary Canucks 14-8 and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Gavin Schmidt tied the game 1-1 for the Canucks 4:43 into the second period. Schmidt’s 10th goal of the season was assisted by Wade Wallace and Nathan Maloney.
Justin Ivanusec then scored his fourth goal of the season at 19:14 to re-establish a lead for the Thunder late in the second period. Marco Oliviero and Jace Moffat were credited with the assists.
At the end of the second period, the Drayton Valley Thunder had outshot the Calgary Canucks 13-9 and took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
Justin Ivanusec scored his second goal of the night, 7:01 into the third period. Anton Yatsyshin and Billy Hooson assisted on Ivanusec’s fifth goal of the season.
Soon afterwards, Jack Plandowski scored his 24th goal of the season for the Canucks at 9:59, with assists from Alexey Trischuk and Nolan DuPont.
Canucks defenceman, Nathan Maloney then tied the game 3-3 with his sixth goal of the season at 19:06. Bowden Singleton and Jayden Joly picked up the assists on the game-tying goal.
At the end of the third period, the Calgary Canucks had outshot the Drayton Valley Thunder 14-10 and tied the game 3-3, forcing an overtime frame.
Gavin Schmidt, however, only needed 0:35 and one shot to secure the overtime win for the Canucks.
The Drayton Valley Thunder outshot the Calgary Canucks 37-32 in total, but the Canucks battled through to take home the 4-3 overtime victory.
Drayton Valley Thunder goaltender Hudson Perry made 28 saves on the 32 shots he faced.
Calgary Canucks’ goaltender Cruz Chase made 34 saves on the 37 shots he faced.

The Drayton Valley Thunder played host to the Olds Grizzyls on Saturday, Jan. 18, winning 6-3.
Gabriel Filion opened the scoring for the Thunder with his fourth goal of the season at 9:53. Filion’s goal was assisted by Marco Oliviero and Taynton Lavender.
Anton Yatsyshin extended the Thunder’s lead to 2-0 at 12:39. Yatsyshin’s eighth goal of the season was assisted by Gabriel Filion and Jace Moffatt.
Johnny Maruna got the Grizzlys on the board with a power play goal at 16:27. Maruna’s first goal of the season was assisted by Brayden Schwartz and Jonathan Doucette.
At the end of the first period, the Drayton Valley Thunder had outshot the Olds Grizzlys 17-9 and took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Grizzlys’ forward, Bailey Shortall tied the game 2-2 just 4:23 into the second period. Shortall’s fifth goal of the season was assisted by Lucas Schaefer.
Anton Yatsyshin scored his second goal of the night at 6:29 to regain the lead for the Thunder. Reid Larson was credited with the assist on Yatsyshin’s ninth goal of the season.
Cooper Brown then scored his 15th goal of the season at 13:50 to give the Thunder a two-goal lead late in the second period. Brown’s goal was assisted by Jace Moffatt and Tafari Chingwaru.
At the end of the second period, the Drayton Valley Thunder had outshot the Olds Grizzlys 13-4 and took a 4-2 lead into the second intermission.
The Grizzlys’ final goal of the game was scored by Lucas Schaefer, 5:15 into the third period. Schaefer’s second goal of the season was assisted by Jaxson Doyle and Jonathan Doucette.
Tucker Tullikopf responded with a power play goal at 6:07. Tullikopf’s seventh goal of the season was assisted by Kohyn Pipke.
Drayton Valley’s Gabriel Fillon scored his second goal of the game, also on a power play, at 7:27, with Taynton Lavender and Anton Yatsyshin picking up the assists on Filion’s fifth goal of the season.
The Drayton Valley Thunder outshot the Olds Grizzlys 14-2 in the third period and 44-15 in total.
Olds Grizzlys’ goaltender Ben Dardis made 38 saves on the 44 shots he faced.
Drayton Valley Thunder goaltender Nicholas Cristiano made 12 saves on the 15 shots he faced in support of the Thunder’s 6-3 victory.

The Drayton Valley Thunder now have a record of 15-14-4-3, for a total of 37 points, placing them fifth in the AJHL South Divison and ninth in the overall league standings.
The Thunder are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 25, as they visit the Camrose Kodiaks.
