Several trees in the Village of Breton are set to be pruned or removed over the next few days as crews attempt to get a Black Knot infestation under control.
Over the summer, village officials had an arborist conduct an assessment of the community as part of the application process for a Fire Ready Grant. During the assessment, the arborist identified several trees infected with Black Knot located mostly in the area around the water tower.
Officials say while some trees can be pruned, many will have to be removed entirely.
Black Knot is a fungal disease that causes greenish-brown or black swells in the stems of cherry trees. This swelling deforms branches, reducing their ability to grow. Heavily infected trees often die from the disease.
Residents are being asked to check the cherry trees on their property for signs of infection and prune any branches that have been affected.
More information on preventative measures being taken by the village can be found on the Village of Breton website.
