The Drayton Valley Thunder had a couple of games over the weekend of Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21, resulting in a 5-2 regulation win and a 5-4 shootout loss, respectively.

On Friday, Sept. 20, the Drayton Valley Thunder took a trip to Canmore Recreation Centre to face off against the Eagles, skating away with a 5-2 win.
Cooper Brown opened the scoring for the Thunder with an unassisted, shorthanded goal at 8:10. to make it 1-0 for the visitors. It was Brown’s second goal of the season.
Braeden Burke then tied the game for the Eagles at 12:50 with his first goal of the season. Tavynn Schlaht and Josh Cleary were credited with assists on the game-tying goal.
Anton Yatsyshin put the Thunder back on top with a power play goal at 14:53. Luke Marley and Matthias Bessey assisted on Yatsyshin’s second goal of the season.
At the end of the first period, the Canmore Eagles had outshot the Drayton Valley Thunder 15-7, but the Thunder took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Ben Buckley kept the pressure on early in the second period for the Thunder with an unassisted goal at 1:23. It was Buckley’s first goal of the season.
Ben Winklemann extended the Thunder lead to 4-1 with a power play goal at 10:56. Winkelmann’s first goal of the season was assisted by Kohyn Pipke and Anton Yatsyshin.
Josh Cleary tried to get the Eagles to rally back with a short-handed goal at 14:17, assisted by Carter Coutu and Nolan Kazeil. It was Cleary’s first goal of the season and made it a 4-2 game.
Anton Yatsyshin scored what turned out to be the final goal of the game, and his second on the night at 17:39, on the power play. Matthias Bessey and Ben Buckely assisted on Yatsyshin’s third goal of the season.
There were no goals scored in the third period, with Canmore outshooting Drayton Valley 32-30.
Canmore Eagles goaltender Alexander Scheiwiller made 25 saves on 30 shots.
Drayton Valley Thunder goaltender Cameron Doucette made 30 saves on 32 shots in support of the Thunder’s 5-2 victory.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Drayton Valley Thunder were back on home ice where they lost 5-4 in a shootout to the Drumheller Dragons.
There was no scoring in the first period despite the Drumheller Dragons outshooting the Drayton Valley Thunder 14-10.
The Thunder’s Cooper Brown opened the scoring with an unassisted, shorthanded goal just 0:56 into the second period. It was Brown’s third goal of the season.
Easton Daneault scored a power play goal for the Dragons at 10:16 to tie the game 1-1. Avery Johnson and Lauchlan Kozicky were credited with the assists on Daneault’s first goal of the season.
Drayton Valley’s Ty Gordon then scored a power play goal of his own at 14:00 for his first goal of the season. Gordon’s goal was assisted by Tim Kim and Kohyn Pipke.
Ayden Peters scored the final goal of the second period for the Dragons at 17:42. Peters first goal of the season was assisted by Bradley Gallo and Jase Johnstone.
At the end of the second period, the Drayton Valley Thunder had outshot the Drumheller Dragons 10-8, however, the score was tied 2-2.
Luca Defour scored his second goal of the season for the Dragons at 7:06 in the third period. That goal was assisted by Ayden Peters and Bradley Gallo.
Ben Winkelmann then scored a power play goal for the Thunder at 9:26 for his second goal of the season. Logan Anderson and Ben Buckley assisted on the goal that tied the game 3-3.
Luke Marley scored on another power play at 11:23 with assists from Ben Buckley and Cooper Brown. It was Marley’s first goal of the season.
Avery Johnson tied the game 4-4 for the Dragons on a power play goal at 18:51. Johnson’s first goal of the season was assisted by Lauchlan Kozicky and Easton Daneault.
At the end of the third period, the Drayton Valley Thunder had outshot the Drumheller Dragons 17-11, but the teams had tied the game 4-4, forcing an overtime frame.
No goals were scored in overtime despite the Drumheller Dragons outshooting the Drayton Valley Thunder 7-3, sending the game to a shootout.
