A Paul Band First Nation man convicted in a fatal crash near Mink Lake, AB, northeast of Drayton Valley in 2022, has been sentenced to just over four-and-a-half years in jail.
Rudy Bird, 41, was sentenced in Stony Plain Court of Justice on Feb. 27, 2024, after being convicted on counts of criminal negligence causing death and accident resulting in death. He was also given a 15-year license suspension.
It was Aug. 4, 2022 at about 4:15 a.m., when Parkland RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision in the Mink Lake area of Highway 770.
Mounties say the driver of one of the vehicles, a 59-year-od woman from Warburg, AB, was pronounced deceased on scene. The occupants of the second vehicle fled the area, police said at the time.
Following a lengthy investigation, RCMP arrested and charged Rudy Bird with the following:
- Criminal negligence causing death
- Fail to remain at the scene of a collision causing death
- Operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited;
- Possession of property obtained by crime over five thousand dollars.
