Crews from Public Works, Parks, and Utilities in Drayton Valley, along with area residents, finished working in the treed area near the landfill last week to clean up garbage and other materials, which have since been hauled to the landfill.
In addition, note Town officials, Drayton Valley and District FCSS staff attended various encampments nearby with Peace Officers from Drayton Valley Enforcement Services to assist with building positive relationships. Officials say the goal is to connect residents experiencing homelessness to available resources that may help them overcome challenges preventing them from being housed.
According to the Town, this partnership is attempting to navigate individuals to the appropriate service provider through direct referrals and follow-ups. Support is being provided to complete personal income tax returns, acquire identification, and complete forms to access government services they may be eligible for, officials point out.
Town officials say most people do not choose to be homeless, and the experience is generally negative, stressful, and distressing. Homelessness is described as a highly complex matter.
“We are thankful for the service providers in the community who are working together to support individuals experiencing homelessness in our area,” reads a statement from Town officials.
