Shelter Pods have come to Drayton Valley.
Shelter Pods are a new form of temporary housing for the homeless.
Drayton Valley’s Shelter Pods are built in a renovated camp shack. When a person needs a place to stay for the night, a volunteer buzzes them in. Inside, they will find a mat to sleep on and a few basic toiletries, according to Town officials.
Drayton Valley’s Shelter Pods have been a joint project between the Drayton Valley and District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), Humans Helping Humans, the Rural Development Network, Employment and Social Development Canada, and the Town of Drayton Valley.
The grand opening was held on April 4, 2022. In her remarks, Drayton Valley Mayor Nancy Dodds mentioned that the first community to do this was the Town of Edson.
“We have been watching them very closely and watching how they deal with shelter needs and homelessness in their community,” said Dodds.
Dodds also thanked the various organizations for their work, and said this is a good step forward.
“I know we are a long way from solving homelessness here in our community, but I believe that this emergency housing is a step in the right direction in helping our most vulnerable residents.”
The Shelter Pods are located at 5309 – 54 Street, across from the RCMP station.
