Fundraising for the new Drayton Valley Brazeau Aquatic Centre is going so well, the fundraising committee is already thinking about expanding.
Drayton Valley town council recently received an update from the DVB Aquatic Centre Committee. The Committee reported that, since their formation in 2020, they have secured more than $900,000 in sponsorships and $85,000 in donations.
The Committee highlighted several of their successful fundraisers. They partnered with Drayton’s grocery stores to collect donations.
They worked with the Drayton McDonald’s for a McFlurry Day, to which McDonald’s reported it was one of their most successful fundraisers.
The Committee also hosted a Community Yard Sale, which the community loved so much, the Committee is getting inquiries about when they may be hosting a second one.
The Committee also promoted several fundraisers they have coming up. Their online silent auction starts on Nov. 7, and they are working with the Drayton Valley Rotary Club to develop an event for Spring 2022.
Committee representative Laureen Bida noted that, with the economy starting to reopen, people are getting more inclined to donate.
“I know that there are people out there who still can do this,” said Bida. “We are seeing more people step forward and send us a note saying, ‘We would like to get on board with your project,’ which is encouraging.”
With all this success, the Committee asked town council to free up some money for more features for the Aquatic Centre.
The Committee asked the Town if they would consider adding $350,000 for a waterslide, and $180,000 for a bouldering traverse wall.
Bida pointed out, however, they are under a bit of a time crunch, as they need to be purchased as soon as possible so they can be installed and ready to go for the Aquatic Centre’s opening day in 2022.
Town council will be considering the Committee’s request as they deliberate the 2022 budget.
