Conservative candidate Gerald Soroka has been re-elected as Member of Parliament for the riding of Yellowhead.
Soroka is a lifelong resident of Evansburg, and was previously voted in as MP for the Yellowhead riding in 2019, replacing two-term MP Jim Eglinski.
Soroka spoke bitter-sweetly as the Conservative Party had been hoping for at least a minority government following Justin Trudeau’s announcement of a snap election.
Soroka spoke with Adam Ophus (94.5 Rewind Radio) just moments after the results came in…
How are you feeling about tonight’s results?
“It’s a little bit of a sad victory because we didn’t win government unfortunately. It’s a shame we spent $600 million to almost be back to what we had before. We’ll play it by ear for the next couple years, or who knows, we’ll see how long this one lasts.”
What are the priorities now for both you and your party moving forward?
“As a party we’re always talking about getting our oil sector back online and getting people back to work. We’re going to keep trying. Hopefully common sense prevails in the east and they start realizing that we still need oil and gas in Canada. Hopefully Canadians will want to start utilizing more Canadian fuel instead of importing from other countries.”
What does tonight’s results say to you both from a local and national perspective?
“Especially in our riding we have almost every natural resource extraction that relies on good paying jobs, so we definitely need to keep these industries going for many years to come until we can come up with something far more cost-effective than fossil fuels, and we’re nowhere near that.”
