Everything is down except for persons crimes.
That is how Drayton Valley RCMP’s acting staff sergeant Erin Matthews sums up the crime situation for the Drayton Valley region.
Matthews recently attended Drayton Valley town council to deliver the RCMP crime statistics for August.
In total, there has been a 30 per cent decrease in Criminal Code offences when compared to this time last year. This includes a 40 per cent decrease in property crimes and a 20 per cent decrease in other criminal code offences.
There has been a 10 per cent increase in persons crimes.
One that Matthews highlight in her report was assaults. There were 17 in August, a 21 per cent increase from last year.
“We laid seven charges, and 10 were deemed to be unfounded,” elaborated Matthews.
There were also eight harassment investigations, a 700 per cent increase from last year.
“The majority of those were dealing with unwanted text messages, unwanted Facebook messages, and that sort of thing. They were all deemed to be unfounded,” explained Matthews. “There was nothing really criminal about them.”
Matthews also elaborated on some of the bigger arrests that happened in her jurisdiction. On Aug. 13, Drayton RCMP executed two search warrants, resulting in a large drug bust.
“That resulted in a seizure of 24 grams of fentanyl, 18 grams of methamphetamines, six grams of cocaine, and over $9,000 cash. He is presently still in jail,” said Matthews.
